Three high-value players Barcelona can afford to sell for summer rebuild

Barcelona’s financial situation finally appears to be improving, and that changes everything heading into the summer transfer window.

With the club expected to return to La Liga’s 1:1 spending rule, Hansi Flick could soon receive far greater freedom in the market than the club has enjoyed in recent years.

That opens the door for Barcelona to seriously pursue several important targets, including a new striker, a centre-back and another winger.

However, despite the optimism surrounding the financial recovery, Barcelona still need to generate major income through player sales if they want to complete an ambitious rebuild this summer.

Fortunately for the club, the squad contains too much value for the club not to consider difficult decisions.

Several first-team players continue to attract strong interest across Europe, particularly from the Premier League, where clubs are willing to spend heavily on proven talent.

While Barcelona would ideally prefer to strengthen the squad without losing important names, the market may force the club into sacrificing one or two high-profile players.

On that note, here is a look at three high-profile exits Barcelona can afford this summer.

Jules Kounde

Jules Kounde’s 2025/26 season never fully reached the level Barcelona fans expected after his outstanding performances during the previous campaign.

While the French defender remained reliable in many matches, his overall influence dipped compared to his excellent 2024/25 form.

Yet, his reputation across Europe remains extremely strong.

Several Premier League clubs are reportedly monitoring the situation closely, viewing Kounde as a defender capable of immediately improving their backline.

At 27 years old and under contract until 2030, Barcelona are in a powerful negotiating position and could demand a huge transfer fee if they decide to listen to offers.

From a sporting perspective, losing Kounde would obviously be significant. However, Flick has already shown this season that he possesses alternative solutions within the squad.

On that note, Eric Garcia has adapted surprisingly well at right-back, while Ronald Araujo is also capable of covering the role when needed.

On the other hand, young academy talent Xavi Espart is another player the coaching staff reportedly view highly for the future.

Ronald Araujo

It is either Kounde or Araujo, but not both and with all due respect, the Uruguayan may actually be the most realistic major sale.

The Barcelona captain remains one of the squad’s most physically gifted players, but the relationship between him and sections of the Barcelona fanbase has become increasingly tense over the last few seasons.

Criticism surrounding his performances has continued growing, and this campaign felt like the point where frustration truly exploded.

Some of that criticism has been harsh, but there is also no denying that injuries, inconsistency and difficult moments in big matches have damaged his standing not just among supporters but also in the pecking order.

Importantly, there is still strong interest in him across Europe, with Premier League clubs continuing to monitor his situation, while teams is Serie A have also maintained admiration for the defender.

With Barcelona searching for defensive reinforcements anyway, cashing in on Araujo while his market value remains high could make strategic sense financially.

Alejandro Balde

Few players in the Barcelona squad possess the raw athletic ability of Alejandro Balde.

At his best, the 22-year-old remains one of the most explosive attacking left-backs in world football.

His pace, directness and ability to stretch the pitch made him one of La Masia’s brightest products in recent years. The problem, however, is consistency.

Injuries have repeatedly interrupted Balde’s development, and this season felt particularly worrying.

Instead of building on the progress shown during the previous campaign, the young defender struggled physically for long periods and never truly regained rhythm.

That opened the door for Joao Cancelo to establish himself as the preferred option on the left side during the second half of the season.

Barcelona are eager to keep Cancelo permanently beyond this season, and if that deal becomes possible financially, Balde could suddenly become one of the squad’s most valuable transfer assets.

His age, potential and homegrown status would attract enormous attention across Europe, particularly from Premier League clubs searching for young full-backs.
