Mexico, Costa Rica and Jamaica have joined the USA bid to host the 2031 Women’s World Cup.

The United States and Mexico had previously pitched to host the 2027 tournament before switching their attention to 2031.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino confirmed in April that the United States had put forward a bid and that ‘other Concacaf members’ could potentially get involved.

The United States put forward the only bid to host the tournament in six years’ time.

Mexico, Costa Rica and Jamaica join 2031 Women’s World Cup bid

US Soccer president Cindy Parlow Cone announced that Mexico, Costa Rica and Jamaica would join the USA bid to stage the 2031 Women’s World Cup.

Cone said: “Together, we have an extraordinary opportunity to host the biggest and most impactful Women’s World Cup in history, one that will inspire a new generation of fans and help grow the women’s game across our entire region and around the world.

“We’re excited to drive lasting progress for women’s soccer by creating a legacy that reaches far beyond 2031 and sets a new global standard for the sport.”

The United States last held a Women’s World Cup in 2003. Mexico have hosted the men’s World Cup in 1986 but this would be the first time they have hosted the women’s tournament.

Jamaica and Costa Rica have never held either the women’s or men’s editions of the World Cup.

How many teams will play at the 2031 Women’s World Cup?

The 2031 Women’s World Cup will feature 48 teams, with 12 groups of four teams and 104 matches in total.

This follows the increase to the men’s World Cup which will increase to 48 teams in 2026.

The United States are also holding that tournament alongside Mexico and Canada.

Which other countries are set to host the Women’s World Cup?

Brazil won the rights to stage the 2027 Women’s World Cup after the United States and Mexico withdrew their interest in the competition.

The United Kingdom are the sole bidders for the 2035 Women’s World Cup.

The hosts for the 2031 and 2035 tournaments will officially be confirmed at a FIFA Congress in Vancouver, Canada, next April.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney aim to bring the tournament to Wrexham in 2035, while Manchester United and Leeds are also clubs that have shown their interest in hosting games.

Which stadiums could host matches?

There have been no confirmed stadiums for the 2031 Women’s World Cup.

However, it is likely that football and NFL teams in the United States will put forward their stadiums.

There could be some similarities to the stadiums that will host games at the men’s World Cup next year.

New Jersey, Dallas, Kansas City, Houston, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco, Miami, Philadelphia and Boston are all hosting games at next year’s tournament.

Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara are also hosting games in Mexico at the men’s World Cup, and therefore could be interested in hosting games in 2031.

National stadiums in Jamaica and Costa Rica will most likely be involved also.
