Three observations from Manchester United’s 1-1 draw vs FC Twente

Manchester United got their Europa League campaign off to a slow start after drawing 1-1 with FC Twente at Old Trafford.

The Reds had no shortage of opportunities to build on their 1-0 lead from Christian Eriksen’s sublime strike before or after the break, but they wasted those chances and only have themselves for having to settle for a point.

It was a bad result for Erik ten Hag against his former club on a night he will want to forget. As we know about the pressure that comes with managing this club, winning football matches is the only way to turn things around.

The 3,500 FC Twente fans in the away end celebrated at full-time like they had won the match. Their team came to Old Trafford, played brilliant football and their faithful fans made plenty of noise throughout the night.

United didn’t show the same energy in the second half

We went in 1-0 up at half-time and I felt it should have been more. United had plenty of chances but didn’t take advantage of them, which feels all too familiar with this side. Sam Lammers’ near post strike equalised the scoring and United were unable to respond because intensity and energy levels dropped in the second half. The players will be kicking themselves because drawing tonight – against a team we should be beating – was yet another missed opportunity for this team.

Rashford played with confidence

Marcus Rashford was the best player in the first half. Oozing with confidence, he guided through FC Twente’s defence like a gazelle. The England international was only lacking end product. Came off in the second half with one eye eye on Sunday’s game against Tottenham, but it looks like he is getting back to himself bit by bit.

Dalot in midfield

Diogo Dalot spent most of the game in midfield rather than left-back. Not only did he carry out his defensive responsibilities, he was often the driving force behind United’s forward play. His transition as a full-back is an exciting one but he’s nowhere near being the finish product yet.
