Having been proclaimed champions just earlier this week, Barcelona are currently in a mood of celebration. However, they must cut all that short as the competition returns to action today.

Tonight, the Catalans take on Villarreal in the penultimate match day of La Liga in what will be a very tricky clash for Hansi Flick’s side.

After all, the Yellow Submarines have won all of their last four games and have just one defeat in their last ten games in the competition.

Neither Barcelona nor Villarreal have anything to play for on the night, for the former have the title in their bag while the latter are all but qualified for the UEFA Champions League. A win, however, would all but assure them of a place in Europe’s premier competition.

Barça Universal brings you three talking points ahead of Barcelona vs Villarreal.

Playing as champions

Barcelona’s celebrations in Catalonia after sealing the La Liga trophy ran long into the night and saw hundreds of thousands of people join the team bus as the Catalans showed off the three trophies they brought home earlier this week.

After all, it was only midweek that they were officially crowned the champions of Spain after a 2-0 win over Espanyol at the RCDE Stadium.

Now officially proclaimed the new holders of the league title in Spain, Barcelona will take to the field for the first time as champions on Sunday night as the holders of the accolade.

Needless to say, it is a matter of pride to do so in front of home fans as much as it is a responsibility to keep the momentum and form up. After all, losing immediately after being crowned champions would be embarrassing.

Villarreal will indeed pose a difficult challenge for Barcelona on Sunday night, but the Catalans will be fixated on providing home fans one final game to celebrate against a tricky opposition. After all, they are the current kings of Spain.

Farewell Montjuic

The renovation of the Spotify Camp Nou has left Barcelona without a home venue for close to two years now, and while it should have had its doors open several months ago, logistical delays have seen the date repeatedly postponed.

It was on May 28th 2023, that Barcelona last played at the venue, and we are currently just ten days short of the two-year mark. Over the past two years, the team has held the Estadi Olimpic de Lluis Companys as its home stadium, and the foster home has not disappointed.

The crowd at Montjuic may not have recreated the tension, atmosphere, and vibe that the Spotify Camp Nou carries, but it has more than sufficed as a foster home venue for the Blaugrana at a time when it seemed impossible to recreate that home feeling.

For two years, Barcelona called the stadium at Montjuic their home and has seen a plethora of successes and lows at the venue. Tonight will be their final game at the esteemed stadium, for they are set to return to the Spotify Camp Nou next season.

Camp Nou is not expected to be ready to host a game until the end of the international break in September, but Barcelona will not play at Montjuic again as they have reportedly asked for their games to be scheduled away from home until the venue is ready.

Tomorrow, thus, is the team’s chance to award the stadium a fitting farewell and tribute for all the support it has provided over the past two years.

The 100-goal mark

Scoring 100 goals across all competitions in a season, in itself, is a commendable achievement for any team in today’s world of football.

Barcelona’s lethal attacking trio and free-flowing attacking football, however, has made them one of the sport’s most lethal attacking machines, and they could break an absurd record tomorrow night.

So far this season, Barcelona have scored 97 goals in just 36 La Liga games and have been in particularly good form in 2025, so much so that they are unbeaten at home this year.

Now just three goals away from the 100-goal mark in La Liga, Barcelona will undoubtedly have it on their agenda to hit the three-digit mark. After all, they are only left with side missions to accomplish after the team’s victory in La Liga.

Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, and Lamine Yamal are all expected to start Barcelona’s penultimate game of the season and will all look to push the team toward a special achievement. Ferran Torres, however, will continue to be unavailable after his surgery.
