Leeds United made their first summer signing on Wednesday, Harry Wilson arriving on a free with a four-year deal after leaving Fulham following a career-best Premier League season. He delivered 10 goals and seven assists in 36 games, mainly from the right behind Raul Jimenez in a four-two-three-one. According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, his versatility hands Daniel Farke multiple options.
One is to replace Brenden Aaronson on the right of a three-four-two-one around Dominic Calvert-Lewin, cutting in onto his left. Out of possession he would defend wide, in possession drift into half-spaces and combine near the striker, with width from Jayden Bogle and sometimes Joe Rodon. It looks the simplest route, though he must match the pressing standards Aaronson sets.
Another is to sit behind two strikers in a three-five-two with Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha, with Ethan Ampadu and Anton Stach anchoring. Wilson could thrive on knockdowns, roam into space and aim that left foot at two aerial threats. It worked at home to Chelsea last season, but the shape can lack width and allow opponents to double up on Bogle and Gabriel Gudmundsson.
Farke could also use him as the No.10 in a four-two-three-one when switching to a back four. Leeds played some of their best football after reverting to a four at home to Liverpool and away at Sunderland and Brentford. With Noah Okafor and Daniel James stretching play, Wilson could find pockets and link with full-backs.
For now that back-four idea feels more like an in-game change if Leeds are chasing goals, given Farke’s possession aims and the current squad profile. Either way, Wilson’s left foot and movement look suited to several setups.
