Throwback: The last time Augsburg beat Bayern Munich

Article image:Throwback: The last time Augsburg beat Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich were nearly unbeatable in the Bundesliga between the years of 2013 and 2023 - an era of pure dominance made for extremly special events whenever a German team was able to get one over der Rekordmeister.

Even though Bayern don't seem like this unstoppable force anymore, a victory against them is still a highlight for most players and clubs - and more often than not a day you're not forgetting for a while, if you're a fan of the opposing team.

Augsburg, who play Bayern tonight in the first game of matchday 28, haven't scored a point against Bayern in their last 5 matchups, in which they conceded 19(!) goals.

It was matchday 7 in the 2022/23 season, when Augsburg won 1-0 (thanks to a goal from Mergim Berisha) against then Julian Nagelsmann's Bayern Munich. Let's have a look back at the side which pulled off the surprise victory and see where those players are now:

Augsburg's starting XI vs Bayern Munich in 2022/23: Where are they now?

Goal:

  1. Rafal Gikiewicz. The Polish goalkeeper is now 37 years old and plays in his home country for Widzew Lodz.

Defense:

  • Robert Gumny. Another Polish player - but in contrast to his former teammate, Gumny is still at Augsburg.
  • Maximilian Bauer. The now 25-year-old is on loan from Augsburg at 2nd tier club Kaiserslautern.
  • Jeffrey Gouweleeuw. Still playing for Augsburg, Gouweleeuw became the Dutch player with the most appearances in the Bundesliga this season.
  • Iago. The Brazilian is currently playing in his home country for EC Bahia.

Midfield:

  • André Hahn. The 1-time capped German international retired from professional football in 2023 and now works as a coach for Frankfurt's U17 side.
  • Elvis Rexhbecaj. Played an important role for Augsburg this season and has played 21 games in 2024/25 so far.
  • Carlos Gruezo. The Ecuadorian is also playing in his home country; he transferred to LDU Quito in the last transfer period.
  • Ermedin Demirovic. One year before he had his breakthrough campaign for Ausgburg - he now plays for Stuttgart and has scored 10 goals in 27 games.

Attack:

  1. Florian Niederlechner. The German striker made an interesting switch to Hertha BSC Berlin in 2023 and still plays there now.
  2. Mergim Berisha. The only goalscorer in Augsburg's last win over Bayern Munich - he earned his move to Hoffenheim in 2023, but he wasn't able to unlock his full potential there. Berisha is now back on loan at Augsburg - let's see if his presence in the club can make for another surprise win against Vincent Kompany's team tonight!
