Aston Villa continued their outstanding form with an impressive 2-1 win over Basel in Switzerland, marking their eighth successive victory across all competitions.
Unai Emery rotated his squad after last weekend’s Premier League win over Arsenal, and it was Evann Guessand who broke the deadlock. The summer signing reacted quickest in a crowded box to slot home after Xherdan Shaqiri failed to clear a corner.
Basel hit back before the break when Flavius Daniliuc glanced Shaqiri’s free-kick into the net, restoring parity and keeping the home crowd hopeful.
Villa’s winner, yet again, came from a substitute. Half-time replacement Youri Tielemans needed just seven minutes to make his mark, curling a composed strike into the bottom-right corner after Emiliano Buendia teed him up. It was Tielemans’ first goal for the club since May and proved decisive.
The win keeps them third in the Europa League group stage, level on points with Lyon, and well-positioned for the last 16 with two crucial matches remaining against Fenerbahce and Red Bull Salzburg.
