Violent clashes between Algeria and Argentina supporters in Times Square have marred Argentina's 2026 World Cup build-up, hours before their meeting at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. Groups fought in one of New York's busiest spots as crowds looked on.
According to Superdeporte, videos on X, Instagram and TikTok showed punches, kicks and shoves amid the crowd. Children and families moved away as the disorder unfolded.
Earlier, fans from several nations had gathered in a festive mood, but the atmosphere shifted suddenly when confrontations began. US authorities have not explained the cause. New York police have not confirmed injuries or arrests.
The clips have drawn thousands of views and widespread condemnation online. The incident has unsettled travelling supporters, with New York a major hub for fans during the tournament, especially before matches.
In contrast, about 3,000 Argentina fans rallied peacefully at Mill Creek Park in Kansas City. Behaviour was exemplary and only FIFA volunteers were seen supervising. The event passed without incident.
Meanwhile, Lionel Scaloni's squad completed final training at the Compass Minerals National Performance Center before their debut. The travelling party then posed for the traditional official photograph.
