Timo Werner (29) was absent from RB Leipzig’s matchday squad for their Matchday 18 Bundesliga clash against Bayern Munich on Saturday evening.
Speaking ahead of the Topspiel, Red Bull CEO Oliver Mintzlaff confirmed that negotiations regarding the German player’s departure are ongoing.
“Negotiations are ongoing,” he told Sky Germany. “And it could be that San Jose Earthquakes become his destination.”
SJ Earthquakes’ interest in Werner, who has played just 13 minutes of Bundesliga football in 2025/26, is well documented.
A secret meeting between the Earthquakes and Werner took place a couple of weeks ago. Due to Werner’s contract expiring in the summer, it should be easy for the MLS side to reach an agreement over a potential fee for the out of favour forward.
The forward rejoined Leipzig in 2022 for €20m following his poor spell at Chelsea. Werner’s return to the club where he made his name was expected to see him rediscover his form, but he struggled and then spent two seasons on loan at Tottenham.
