Albion are working on a move to bring Manchester United midfielder Toby Collyer back to the club, with a permanent deal being pursued. ExpressAndStar.com understands that the 22-year-old England youth prospect is a target for a return to The Hawthorns this window.
Collyer is in the final year of his United contract and the Old Trafford side are expected to sanction a sale. United are thought to be seeking a sizeable fee for the West Sussex-born midfielder, signed from Brighton in 2022. He has made 14 first-team appearances for United, including three starts and six Premier League outings as a substitute.
He joined West Brom on loan this time last year but an injury curtailed a half-season that brought only 12 appearances, three from the start. The move, secured with fanfare by then boss Ryan Mason, never gathered momentum while Mason was under pressure and results dipped.
United recalled him at the start of January after limited minutes, and he finished the campaign at Championship rivals Hull, who went on to earn promotion to the Premier League. He featured only five times for the Tigers, once as a starter.
Collyer has been involved in United’s pre-season, including overseas tours, with senior players returning later after the World Cup break.
Albion lost prospective captain Alex Mowatt to Derby last week on the eve of the Championship season. James Morrison has said he is interested in adding a midfielder as a replacement, though he has also stressed that, as things stand, the priority is a winger. Comfortable deep or further forward, Collyer could enhance those options.
