Toluca and Tigres UANL are set to meet once again in a title-deciding series, this time in the grand final of the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup, which will be played this Saturday at Estadio Nemesio Díez.

Beyond the continental crown, both clubs will also battle for a more lucrative prize: a ticket to the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup and the right to play in this year’s Intercontinental Cup.

The Diablos Rojos are aiming to qualify for the new Club World Cup format for the very first time, a tournament that will feature 34 teams and whose next edition in 2029 still does not have a confirmed host nation.

Motivation could not be higher for either side, especially after the 2025 edition held in the United States, where Chelsea ended up lifting the trophy while the rest of the planet was once again reminded that European clubs apparently enjoy collecting silverware like infinity stones.

History Between Toluca vs. Tigres in Finals

The final between Toluca and Tigres also comes with an extra layer of spice because of their recent history.

Just a few months ago, both teams faced off in the Apertura 2025 Liga MX Final, a brutally tight series that ultimately had to be decided from the penalty spot. It was the first time in history that the Scarlet Devils and the Felinos played against each other for a championship.

In that Liga MX final, Tigres struck first in the opening leg at Estadio Universitario, while Toluca answered back in the return leg at Estadio Nemesio Díez with a 2-1 victory that leveled the aggregate score.

The title eventually came down to penalties, where the Diablos prevailed to secure back-to-back Liga MX championships and send half of Monterrey into therapy for at least a week.

Now, both clubs will square off again with practically the same masterminds on the bench.

Antonio Mohamed remains in charge of Toluca, while Guido Pizarro continues leading the Tigres project, adding even more tension, familiarity, and mutual annoyance to this unprecedented international final.

The series promises to become one of the biggest clashes in Mexican soccer in recent years. Toluca will try to extend its winning momentum after conquering the Apertura 2025 title, while Tigres will seek immediate revenge and another international trophy that could return them to the global club elite — or at the very least, give their fans fresh ammunition for arguments on social media.

Tigres’ Road to the Final

Tigres opened their tournament run on February 3 when they were paired against Canadian side Forge FC, a team they comfortably defeated 4-1 on aggregate.

Things became far more complicated afterward for the Monterrey side. In the Round of 16, they suffered a crushing 3-0 defeat in the first leg against Cincinnati, a result that looked certain to eliminate them from the competition. But in the return match at Estadio Universitario, Tigres produced an epic comeback by defeating the MLS club 5-1.

The quarterfinals were not exactly stress-free either. Although Tigres won the first leg 2-0 against Seattle Sounders, they fell 3-1 in the second leg at Lumen Field. However, that precious away goal ended up saving them and sending them through to the semifinals, where they defeated Nashville SC 2-0 on aggregate to secure their place in the final.

Toluca’s Road to the Final

Toluca, meanwhile, looked absolutely ruthless throughout most of the tournament.

The now former Liga MX champions began their campaign in the Round of 16 with a 3-2 loss against San Diego FC. Despite the defeat, they recovered in emphatic fashion by destroying Mikel Varas’ side 4-0 at Estadio Nemesio Díez.

In the quarterfinals, they steamrolled LA Galaxy with a humiliating 7-2 aggregate scoreline that probably still appears in Galaxy fans’ nightmares.

In the semifinals, Toluca lost 2-1 at BMO Field against LAFC, but back on their home turf they flipped the series upside down, winning 4-0 for a dominant 5-2 aggregate victory over the team led by Denis Bouanga and Heung-min Son.

Toluca will be without Alexis Vega and Jesús Gallardo for this match, as both players are already with the Mexican National Team ahead of the World Cup.

On the Tigres side, head coach Guido Pizarro will have a full squad available, including French striker André-Pierre Gignac, the club legend who could be playing his final match with Tigres. Reports indicate he is expected to join Orlando City in MLS once his time with the Felinos officially comes to an end. Apparently even legends eventually decide they, too, deserve Florida weather.
