Sunderland interim chief executive Tom Burwell says the club’s owners remain focused on a long-term plan despite suggestions they are exploring a sale, and he played down any expectation of imminent change.
Reports earlier this year said an investment bank had been retained to assess a potential sale. The ownership group said in a statement that they remained entirely committed, were excited by progress, and were planning aggressively for a second Premier League season.
Burwell said increased interest was inevitable given the Premier League’s global pull and the scarcity created by only 20 clubs, but he cautioned there was no sign of near-term movement.
He added that he speaks regularly with Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and sees daily evidence of support for the club’s next phase. He noted that approaches, some credible and some not, go directly to ownership and sit outside his remit.
Burwell also pointed to year two of a capital investment programme across the stadium and the academy, which he framed as the behaviour of long-term owners. He said the leadership remains joined up and connected with supporters.
