Tom Burwell has issued a rallying message to Sunderland supporters after the Black Cats clinched a Europa League place, their first European football in 53 years. According to Sunderland Echo, the landmark came at the end of a remarkable Premier League campaign.
Régis Le Bris’ side finished seventh after a 2-1 final day victory over Chelsea at the Stadium of Light, with other results also falling their way. The win completed a rise from League One to Europe in just four years.
The achievement arrived exactly 12 months after promotion at Wembley. Having returned to the top flight through the Championship play-offs, Sunderland had been widely tipped to battle relegation.
Burwell wrote: “What a day. What a week. What a season.” He said it began at Wembley a year ago and ended at the Stadium of Light, praising a 49,000-strong 12th man who roared Sunderland to a second victory against Chelsea this season and into Europe. He added that there were too many heroes to list, on the pitch, in the stands and around the world, and that Sunderland are marching on Europe.
The final whistle prompted emotional celebrations around the Stadium of Light, with players, staff, supporters and the ownership group saluting a watershed afternoon.
