Tom Saettel, 21, will sign his first professional contract with Pau FC and join their Ligue 2 side next season after winning the club’s Qui va signer pro? programme.

L'Équipe reports that the talent search, fronted by content creator and reserve player Valentin Liénard, was pitched as a football version of The Voice offering a pro deal to an amateur.

Strasbourg academy-trained, the Alsatian is no ordinary amateur. A former France U18, he started the 2022 Euro U17 final won by Les Bleus alongside Désiré Doué, Mathys Tel and Warren Zaïre-Emery.

This season he played for Haguenau in National 2. The 1.67 m left winger now makes a rapid step up into the second tier.

The project aimed to give a player who slipped through the net a route into the professional game. Saettel is the first to benefit, and the Béarn club’s approach could inspire others.
