Birmingham City are currently suffering a poor run of form
Birmingham City chairman Tom Wagner has given his stance on manager Chris Davies’ future.
The Second City side entered the 2025/26 campaign with a great deal of momentum, after clinching last season’s League One title in record-breaking fashion.
Blues continued their ambitious attitude into the transfer market, signing players such as Tommy Doyle, Kyogo Furuhashi and Demarai Gray to bolster their chances of fighting towards the play-off places upon their return to the Championship.
In reality, Birmingham have struggled to hit the ground running. Early victories over Blackburn Rovers and Oxford United were real sources of optimism for Davies’ side, but they have won just one more game since mid-August.
Picking up five points from their last six Championship encounters has firmly halted Blues’ promotion charge and started to heap pressure on their manager’s job security.
Birmingham’s chairman, Tom Wagner, was present for the Second City outfit’s recent draw with Wrexham and revealed his stance on Davies’ future whilst at the game.
Birmingham’s previous two matches have seen them come from behind to draw, with Patrick Roberts’ first goal for the club enough to secure a point against Wrexham.
As other sides in the division begin to find their best team and hit runs of form, Blues appear to be doing the opposite, which has led to questions over whether Davies is the correct man to lead them forward throughout the rest of the season.
During this time of uncertainty, the Second City side’s chairman has come out and backed his manager to succeed.
“Chris has the complete and total confidence of the board,” stated Wagner to Sky Sports. “Period. Full stop.
“We are focused on process, and I am confident the process he is pursuing will pay dividends and we will be competitors. The vast majority of people understand that.”
Davies was appointed as Birmingham boss in 2024 and masterminded their record-breaking promotion from League One last term.
The 40-year-old was previously assistant manager to Brendan Rodgers at Leicester City, in a time when the Foxes regularly enjoyed European football and claimed the FA Cup in 2021.
Wagner’s public support of Davies may remove some immediate pressure off his back, but Blues’ manager will still be wary that results must improve if he wants to remain in his position at St. Andrew’s for the long term.
Birmingham’s chairman hasn’t been shy to discuss his ambitions for the club, with the Sports Quarter project a perfect example of the grand plans he has.
The 2025/26 campaign is still young and with lots more football to play, Blues could hit the ground running eventually and shoot up the league.
