Boca Juniors have suffered a major setback after Tomás Aranda sustained a serious injury in training, and he could require surgery.

According to LaNumer12.com.ar, the midfielder twisted his leg during the warm-up at Ezeiza and left the pitch, with scans confirming a rupture of the fibular syndesmosis.

The incident was non-contact during a rondo drill as the squad prepared to host Lanús at La Bombonera on Friday 28 at 21:30, the seventh round of the Torneo Clausura.

The blow is an unexpected headache for Rodolfo Arruabarrena, who had been bedding in his midfield plan with Aranda prominent in most games. He must now reconfigure the centre quickly.

Medical guidance indicates a rehabilitation period of four to six months. Aranda is awaiting final specialist reports to confirm a surgery date, after which he will begin physiotherapy.

Arruabarrena’s group have several others in the treatment room, including Marco Pellegrino, Ayrton Costa, Leandro Lozano, Malcom Braida, Lautaro Di Lollo, Leandro Paredes and now Aranda.

The world champion and the academy centre-back are close to returning and could be back against Lanús. Agustín Marchesín and Rodrigo Battaglia are also recovering from long absences but are not yet available.
