Tommy Watson could join Leicester City on a season-long loan in League One this summer.
Sunderland Echo understands Leicester are in pole position to land the 20-year-old from Brighton and Hove Albion, with talks progressing, but no deal is yet in place.
The winger became a Sunderland promotion hero with a stoppage-time winner at Wembley in last season’s Championship play-off final, his final act in red and white before a permanent move to the south coast.
Since joining Brighton he has struggled for regular minutes, making 10 senior appearances, nine as a substitute. He spent the second half of last season on loan at Millwall in the Championship.
Leicester, relegated last season, are targeting an immediate return to the Championship. They began the campaign under Marti Cifuentes and finished 23rd under Gary Rowett.
In June the Foxes appointed Russell Martin as head coach and have added three players, striker Conor Chaplin and goalkeeper Alex McCarthy on free transfers, plus Manchester City full-back Christian McFarlane on loan.
