Former Real Madrid midfield icon Toni Kroos has shared his thoughts on Arda Guler’s role in the new-look Real Madrid under Xabi Alonso.

Speaking on his regular podcast Einfach mal Luppen, which he co-hosts with his brother Felix, the retired German midfielder made it clear he’s a big fan of the Turkish youngster’s talent.

Kroos highlighted Guler’s unique ability to move between the lines and create attacking opportunities.

“When you have a player like him, who knows how to find space, you can forgive him if he loses a duel now and then,” Kroos explained.

However, he also pointed out that this freedom in attack doesn’t mean ignoring defensive duties. “The important thing is that he understands his role in the team and joins the collective effort when defending,” he added.

Guler ready for bigger role

Kroos believes the timing is perfect for Guler to take on more responsibility at Real Madrid.

“Last year, he already had the technical level with the ball, but now physically he has also taken a step forward. He’s ready,” said Kroos, who knows exactly what it takes to succeed in Madrid’s midfield.

The former midfielder also spoke about the importance of team defence, something Xabi Alonso is trying to build his new Madrid project around.

“When everyone defends together, the team benefits. Recovering the ball gives energy. If you don’t press or help defensively, you will end up chasing the ball the whole game.

“That was one of the big problems last year,” Kroos admitted.

Looking at the bigger picture, Kroos shared his belief that having a clear system is the first step when building a team with a new coach. “You have to know what the plan is and then choose the players that fit that idea best.”

To close, Kroos expressed his full support for Alonso. Despite only sharing the dressing room briefly with him during his playing days, Kroos is confident in Alonso’s leadership.

“I have a lot of trust in Xabi. He has a clear vision and knows how to get his message across. If they defend well, they’ll attack even better,” he concluded.
