Tony Mowbray 'to target' Alan Browne for Blackburn as Championship clubs circle | OneFootball

Blackburn Rovers are among the Championship clubs weighing a move for Sunderland midfielder Alan Browne. According to the Lancashire Telegraph, Tony Mowbray is keen on a deal after returning to Ewood Park as head coach earlier this summer.

Browne, 31, has drawn interest from numerous second-tier sides thanks to his extensive experience. He featured regularly for Middlesbrough after a deadline-day loan last summer, taking the Championship player of the month award at one stage.

A return to the Riverside has been viewed as unlikely this summer, with Boro prioritising other midfield targets. That has put rivals on alert, and Browne is expected to leave Sunderland later in the window. No agreement is advanced.

He has travelled to the USA with his team-mates and started the opening pre-season friendly against York City. He is expected to play a prominent part against Liverpool, Leeds United and Wrexham in Granit Xhaka's absence.

Xhaka remains on a summer break following World Cup commitments and will rejoin the squad ahead of the RC Lens friendly on August eighth.

Browne has one year left on his deal, so Sunderland are unlikely to demand a major fee. They still want terms, loan or permanent, that improve their position and reflect his pedigree.
