FC Bayern face FC St. Pauli on Saturday – but ahead of the Bundesliga clash, coach Vincent Kompany turned his attention to another issue that has been worrying him for weeks: goals conceded from set-pieces.
At the press conference, the Belgian made his team unequivocally responsible.
„Over the last 18 months, we’ve been a stable team from set-pieces, including offensively. But we’re going through a phase,“ explained Kompany. Since the start of the season, Munich have repeatedly conceded avoidable goals from set-pieces – most recently in the 3-1 defeat to Arsenal in the Champions League.
The Bayern coach emphasized that it is now all about analysis and the right reaction: „What I want is for us to find the right analysis, the right solution. That this becomes our greatest strength again.“ He also made it clear that standards must not become a weak point for a top team.
Above all, Kompany believes that individual tasks must be performed more consistently again. He clearly states: „Individually, we have to be stronger in these situations. If the ball comes in and there is chaos, you have to head the ball out.“

Munich are still top of the Bundesliga table, but their defensive vulnerability after resting balls remains a recurring pattern. Opponents such as Freiburg, Cologne and Mainz have repeatedly had great chances from corners and free-kicks in recent weeks.
In view of the tight fixture schedule with upcoming top games in the league, cup and Champions League, Kompany knows that Bayern must solve this problem quickly. „The phase is what it is. We have to solve it and close the lid,“ he made clear.
