The heavyweights have held firm. The 2026 World Cup semi-finals feature France, Spain, England and Argentina, all former champions and the top four in the FIFA ranking.

Argentina sealed their place by beating Switzerland 3-1 after extra time. According to Opta, this is only the third World Cup in which all four semi-finalists have previously won the tournament.

The other instances came in 1970 with Germany, Italy, Uruguay and Brazil, and in 1990 with England, Germany, Italy and Argentina.

There will be no new name on the trophy on 19 July after the final.

The favourites have stayed the course in 2026.
