Chelsea believe were it not for Robert Sanchez they may not have qualified for the Champions League last season according to reports.

Sanchez has very much divided opinion since his arrival from Brighton in the summer of 2023, with many supporters feeling a new goalkeeper is required.

The Spaniard has been number one for the majority of those two years, but was dropped for a handful of games last season after a costly error in a defeat to Manchester City.

Chelsea not planning to replace Sanchez

Chelsea had the opportunity to sign Mike Maignan earlier this summer, but the Blues weren’t prepared to match AC Milan’s valuation, and the deal didn’t happen.

Supporters were left frustrated by that decision, given the opportunity to sign a top goalkeeper doesn’t come round often.

The 27-year-old is set to once again be number one next season, but there are still a lot of question marks surrounding Sanchez, and whether the Blues can win a league title with him in goal.

The Spain international’s form picked up towards the end of last season, and he put in a series of impressive performances, which carried through into the Club World Cup.

Sanchez is a very good shot stopper, but his distribution leaves a lot to be desired, and no keeper made more errors leading to goals than him in the Premier League last season.

However, he’s clearly highly rated at Chelsea and Mail Sport have reported the Blues feel were it not for Sanchez, they might not have qualified for the Champions League.

Chelsea linked with Donnarumma

Despite Chelsea being unlikely to sign a goalkeeper this summer, that hasn’t stopped the Blues being linked with names.

Chelsea have been linked with Paris Saint Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who could leave the French giants this summer.
