I have been looking at the Newcastle United squad.
Trying to rationalise where we are at.
This summer saw plenty of movement in and out of the Newcastle United squad.
So what has Eddie Howe got to work with?
I make it 27 players in total.
When thinking about how strong the Newcastle United squad is for this season’s challenge of competing in four competitions, I have divided the players into two groups.
In total, I have 19 players in one group, the other eight in another.
Now I know we all have different ideas about where all our players should be ranked in order, but I have looked at each of them and picked out those who when they are picked in the starting eleven, I see them all above a certain line.
That line representing Newcastle United players where I don’t think there is any worrying drop in levels if they are picked in the team.
So the 19 players listed below are the ones where I am ok to see them picked for any match, with then in brackets the ones I see as not quite at the same levels (obviously with younger players such as Lewis Miley, I see him as in time climbing above this line).
Goalkeepers
Nick Pope, Aaron Ramsdale
(John Ruddy, Mark Gillespie)
Defenders
Lewis Hall, Sven Botman, Dan Burn, Tino Livramento, Fabian Schar, Malick Thiaw, Kieran Trippier
(Harrison Ashby, Emil Krafth, Jamaal Lascelles)
Midfielders
Harvey Barnes, Anthony Elanga, Anthony Gordon, Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton, Jacob Murphy, Jacob Ramsey, Sandro Tonali
(Joe Willock, Lewis Miley)
Strikers
Yoane Wissa, Nick Woltemade
(Will Osula)
I am not writing off many of these players in brackets, we have already seen for example Will Osula suggesting he could have a decent part to play this season.
However, when you are talking about playing every weekend and midweek, especially when it is Premier League and Champions League, then I think you can see how difficult it becomes for Eddie Howe at times already. Out of my group of 19 Newcastle United players at the higher level, we have seen both Hall and Botman taking time this season t get to full match fitness, whilst the likes of Wissa, Woltemade, Schar, Gordon and Ramsey haven’t been available for a number of the eight matches so far.
Bottom line is that it is vital to have as many of these 19 players as possible, available throughout this huge season.
