Top Three World Cup Players | Senegal

Despite a spirited World Cup campaign, Senegal were knocked out of the the tournament after a 3-0 loss to Gareth Southgate’s superior England side.

The African side did have some chances early on to take the lead but England slowly grew into the game and goals from Jordan Henderson, Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka ended their run in the competition. Regardless, it was a run to be proud of, even though they couldn’t replicate the achievements of 2002.

Here, we look at the top three performers for Senegal in the World Cup, now that the dust has settled.

Ismaila Sarr

The Watford man was sparkling for Senegal from the very first game against the Netherlands, who were left reeling by his pace and ability to take players on as Sarr proved to be a nightmare for Matthijs de Ligt. He also made it a tough outing for Kyle Walker against England and scored a vital penalty against Ecuador in the decisive group stage game.

Youssouf Sabaly

The 29-year-old right-back was regularly an enthusiastic presence on the right side of the pitch as he was constantly making runs forward and trying to create things in the final third. His overlaps caused problems for the opposition regularly and he was constantly looking to get in-behind the opposition backline – something that will put him in good stead for AFCON next year.

Kalidou Koulibaly

It was Koulibaly’s goal in the game against Ecuador that set Senegal through to the Round of 16 and his performance in that game was inspired. Even in a losing cause against England, he won four tackles and managed to win three aerial duels as well. It is a disappointment that he could not showcase his ability to carry the ball up the field.
