Tottenham 0-2 Newcastle: Elanga and Wissa fire the Magpies to victory over Spurs | OneFootball

Newcastle left North London with all three points after goals from Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa handed Matthias Jaissle his first Premier League win in charge.

After a relatively even opening hour, Newcastle struck first through Anthony Elanga, who scored his second of the season already. Yoane Wissa added Newcastle’s second of the night after an instinctive, acrobatic finish.

The visitors saw the game out with relative ease, as Matthias Jaissle earned a first Premier League win as Newcastle manager.

As it happened

Newcastle started brightly and had the first few sightings of goal through Anthony Elanga and Harvey Barnes, but Spurs survived the early pressure.

The first effort from the home side came from Mathys Tel after nice work from Jan Paul Van Hecke and Omar Marmoush, but the Frenchman’s strike was well kept out by Lukáš Horníček. The Spurs pressure continued, culminating in Pedro Porro showing brilliant composure in the box to create space for a shot, but Lewis Hall managed to react quickly and block the goalbound effort.

Marmoush passed up a great opportunity after 32 minutes, with a corner finding the Egyptian wide open at the back post, but he was unable to get his volley on target as he searched for a debut goal. The hosts continued to threaten with Van Hecke next to have a chance, but his header was saved by Horníček.

The second half started in a similar fashion to the first, with the game remaining end-to-end despite a lack of quality in the final third from either side.

That was until the 61st minute, when Nico González played a wonderful switch of play to find Amar Dedić, who headed the ball into the path of Elanga. The Swede swivelled on the ball before firing a left-footed effort which clipped the inside of the post before finding the back of the net, giving Newcastle the lead in North London. Elanga, who failed to score a league goal for Newcastle all last season, had his second in two games this campaign.

Ten minutes later, the visitors doubled their lead. Lewis Hall delivered a wonderful corner, which substitute Nick Woltemade nodded down, falling to Yoane Wissa facing away from goal, but Newcastle’s number nine produced a wonderful acrobatic effort, capping off a brilliant individual performance.

Omar Marmoush had Tottenham’s best chance of the second half, but his volley at the back post was comfortably saved by Horníček. It was the home side’s first effort on target since half-time, showing how poor they had been in the second half.

Tottenham made it back-to-back defeats to start the new season, and have failed to score in either game. It is not the start Roberto De Zerbi would have been looking for after a summer of splashing the cash in the transfer market.
