Spurs remain active on both incomings and outgoings during a busy window

Middlesbrough have agreed a permanent deal to sign Tottenham centre-back Ashley Phillips.

Standard Sport understands that the Championship club will pay an up-front fee of £7million plus potential future add-ons for the 21-year-old, who is set to undergo a medical.

It is believed that Spurs have also negotiated a sell-on clause in the deal to take Phillips to the Riverside Stadium.

Middlesbrough have been in pursuit of Phillips all summer and now look set to raid Tottenham for the second time in this window after securing the signing of striker Will Lankshear last month in a club-record move that could rise as high as £20m.

Kim Hellberg’s side are targeting another Premier League promotion push this season after losing to Hull in the play-off final in May and have identified Phillips to bolster their defence.

Phillips has a wealth of experience in England’s second tier, having made over 100 Championship appearances already across spells with Blackburn, Plymouth and Stoke.

Spurs signed Phillips for £2.5m from Blackburn in 2023, with Rovers agreeing a 15 per cent clause on the profit from any future sale.

The England youth international will become the latest academy player to leave Tottenham permanently this summer after the departures of Lankshear, Alfie Devine and Tynan Thompson.

Spurs have been keen to maximise player sales and are edging close to banking £100m in outgoing transfer fees following the sale of Phillips.

Tottenham are looking to offset the £237m they have already spent on new players this summer and expect to bring in two or three more signings before the end of the window next month.
