Martin Ho has made it clear that his priority at Tottenham Women is building a new identity for the team, even if it means sacrificing short-term results.

The new Spurs manager is determined to build the squad’s mentality and style of play following a difficult 2024-25 season.

Tottenham finished second from bottom in the Women’s Super League last season and ended the campaign without a win in ten matches.

Ho quickly ended that run by guiding his side to a 1-0 victory over West Ham in their opening game.

It was Spurs’ first competitive win since January when they beat Crystal Palace.

Spurs followed that off with a 2-0 victory over Everton at the weekend thanks to goals from Olga Ahtinen and Cathinka Tandberg.

The positive start to the campaign provides immediate relief for players and supporters alike. Ho, who took charge in the summer after Robert Vilahamn’s departure, is not letting this change his long-term plans.

Tottenham boss Martin Ho prioritises performances over results

Martin Ho wants his Tottenham players to be more expressive and brave on the ball, but insists that performances matter more than simply winning at any cost.

“The biggest thing for me is performance,” he explained. For Ho, focusing on how the team plays is the foundation for lasting success.

“If you dismiss the performance, you probably lose the process behind the results. The performance gets you the results, I’m really, really big on that. I tell the players that a lot.

“If we perform to a level that we expect and it’s consistent, the results will follow naturally.

Ho also recognises that dips in form are inevitable but sees it as his responsibility to keep the team resilient, confident and competitive when those moments come.

Tottenham only made two signings in the summer transfer window, which meant Ho’s first task was to rebuild confidence and belief within a group that had not tasted victory for nine months.

“Eighty per cent of it was building a mentality and a confidence and a belief, and trying to instil that behaviour in the group,” he said.

The manager credits his players for embracing the new identity and approach he is promoting. He feels the win over West Ham gave them a boost both individually and collectively, lifting a weight off their shoulders. The challenge now is to maintain that feeling and build momentum through consistent performances.

What’s next for Tottenham?

Martin Ho wants Tottenham Women to value performances over results in the short term because he believes this will create a stronger and more competitive team in the long run. While winning remains important, he insists the process behind it matters even more.

Tottenham’s 100 per cent record comes under threat on Friday when they host Manchester City, who have also won their opening two games.
