It has been a nightmare start to the season for Tottenham - despite spending big in the summer

Tottenham are among the favourites to be relegated from the Premier League this season, according to Opta.

Spurs flirted dangerously close with disaster last season, only securing their status on the final day with a nervy 1-0 win over Everton.

In an attempt to avoid another relegation battle, Tottenham spent more than £300million on new players to fund Roberto De Zerbi’s rebuild during the summer transfer window.

Tottenham slumped to 20th after losing at home to Aston Villa at the weekend - coupled with results elsewhere going against them - leaving them with just two points from a possible 15.

Of course, as only five games of the new season have been played, there is plenty of time for Spurs to turn things around but Opta has still given them a 29.39 percent chance of being relegated, with a predicted final position of 18th.

While, newly-promoted Coventry's 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest at the weekend has taken them above Spurs in the table, Opta has still given them a 43.82 percent chance of being relegated.

Fulham, above Tottenham by virtue of a marginally superior goal difference have been given a 42.40 percent chance of dropping into the Championship.

Spurs' first game after the international break is against Manchester United at Old Trafford on October 10 before facing Coventry, Chelsea, Crystal Palace and then Leeds which will lead into the November international break.

Andy Robertson remains optimistic about Spurs’ chances of staying up, but is aware his new team-mates may still be carrying the weight of last season's struggles on their shoulders.

He said: "You just see certain moments, like the Liverpool game, we played so well there in moments, and then you get a goal against you, and it's like [heads down].

“And then we go back to 2-1, and all of a sudden it's chests out, and everyone's wanting the ball, and it's like, we need that all the time even if you go 1-0 down, or it's 0-0 late on.

“When we played Everton, we dominated pretty much the whole game, but we started getting panicked near the end, and we started rushing things.”
