Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lucas Bergvall has signed a new long-term contract, the club have confirmed.

Bergvall joined the club during the summer for a fee of £8.5m and has been one of very few positives across a bitterly disappointing campaign for Spurs.

The 19-year-old has been a regular starter across the second half of the season and has racked up a total of 45 appearances in all competitions to date, chipping in with one goal and four assists.

Bergvall's initial contract ran until 2029 but Spurs confirmed the Sweden international is now tied to the club until 2031, having been handed superior terms as a reward for his emergence as a key player under Ange Postecoglou.

While the Australian manager may not be at the club next season, Bergvall is expected to retain his role as a key member of the squad, with this new deal a sign of the club's long-term commitment to his development.

It was reported recently that Spurs are braced for a challenging summer transfer window which could see them forced to sell players before they can fund new signings in the market.

With funds not expected to be freely available, the recruitment team will hope to find more bargains like Bergvall, who arrived at the club with fewer than 60 senior appearances in Scandinavia but wasted little time in proving he was capable of playing at a higher level.

Bergvall and fellow summer recruit Archie Gray have both impressed in an otherwise catastrophic campaign for Spurs, assuring fans that the team's midfield is in a healthy position ahead of an uncertain summer.
