Xavi Simons has ruptured the ACL in his right knee, sustained in Tottenham’s 1-0 win at Wolves on Saturday. The 23-year-old faces a lengthy lay-off.
He suffered the injury in the second half while chasing a loose ball alongside Hugo Bueno. Simons collapsed in obvious pain and was carried off on a stretcher.
The club said in a statement that he will undergo surgery in the coming weeks, then begin rehabilitation with their medical team.
On Sunday he posted on social media describing himself as heartbroken and accepting his season is over. He added he could be out for up to eight months, which would rule him out of this summer's World Cup with the Netherlands.
The setback compounds a campaign riddled by injuries. Cristian Romero faces up to eight weeks out with a knee tear, Wilson Odobert is in prolonged recovery from an ACL injury, Dejan Kulusevski remains absent with a knee problem, and Ben Davies is sidelined by an ankle fracture as his contract expires this summer.
Spurs are trying to overhaul one of Leeds United, West Ham or Nottingham Forest to avoid relegation.
