Tottenham Hotspur’s deadline day deal for AS Monaco forward Gelson Martins is “still alive” although time is running out to sign him, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.
The Portugal international has played just 82 minutes of football in Ligue 1 this season, and amid Antonio Conte’s search for a new winger in this summer transfer window, Martins’ name has seemingly cropped up.
And, with Leeds United’s Daniel James seemingly on his way to Fulham amid links with Spurs, it appears Martins is being touted with a potential move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, he said: “Yeah, I think it’s a deal that’s still alive. It’s an option Spurs have got right now, I don’t see many other options available for them now.
“It looks like Dan James is heading to Fulham in search of first-team football as well, so with the clock ticking down, there’s not much time for Spurs to get a deal done for Gelson Martins.”
Having signed from Atletico Madrid for a fee believed to be in the region of €30m (£26m), Martins has struggled to deliver consistent performances for the Ligue 1 side during his time in France.
In his four full campaigns thus far, he has managed a high of just four league goals, while he’s never bettered a tally of four assists in a single season either.
However, given Conte is looking to build a squad to compete on multiple fronts this season, not least the top end of the Premier League and the latter stages of the Champions League, Martins would have represented a shrewd piece of business.
The Portuguese star has played Champions League football before in his time with Monaco, Atletico and Sporting, while he has featured in the Europa League as well – the kind of top-level European experience that Conte would no doubt have dearly counted at Hotspur Way.
If Spurs could somehow pull a deal out of the bag for Martins in the final moments of the summer transfer window, it would go down as a significant coup.
