Tottenham expected to renew interest in free agent Mario Hermoso | OneFootball

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in Atletico Madrid centre-back Mario Hermoso but have not made concrete moves to sign him.

However, according to Radio Punto Nuovo, Tottenham’s dormancy could change in the coming weeks as interest in the free agent heats up.

Hermoso was crucial for Diego Simeone’s side last term, helping them keep eight clean sheets in 31 appearances.

The 29-year-old featured on the left side of Atletico’s back three and filled in at left-back when needed.

Hermoso could deputise for Micky van de Ven at Spurs. He does not currently have a replacement in the squad.

Van de Ven was a revelation last term, but he struggled with injuries, and manager Ange Postecoglou had to play Ben Davies at centre-back.

Hermoso can adeptly fill in for Van de Ven, allowing Davies to play back-up to left-back Destiny Udogie.

Spurs struggled when the first-teamers suffered injuries. It derailed the campaign, and they must avoid a repeat in the coming season.

Postecoglou needs excellent options off the bench if he wants to compete for the Premier League title next season.

However, Tottenham will likely face intense competition for Hermoso, who is a wanted man this summer due to his status as a free agent.

Napoli are keen on adding him to Antonio Conte’s squad for next season as they look to revamp their defence. Aston Villa and Chelsea are also eyeing a move for him.
