Good news for Spurs going into second leg of Champions League last-16 tie

Tottenham have been given a major injury boost after Lucas Bergvall returned to training after almost two months out with an ankle injury.

Bergvall has been sidelined since January after ankle surgery and was not expected to return until April.

But the midfielder trained with the Spurs squad on Tuesday ahead of their Champions League second leg against Atletico Madrid.

Igor Tudor will provide an update on Bergvall’s return on Tuesday afternoon when he holds his press conference ahead of the Atletico game.

But his return to fitness is a major boost for Spurs in their battle to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

Spurs had Cristian Romero back in training after he missed Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Liverpool after clashing heads with Joao Palhinha in the 5-2 first-leg defeat to Atletico last week, in an incident Tudor bemoaned as further proof of Spurs’ “incredible” bad luck.

Concussion protocols meant Romero and Palhinha were ruled out at Anfield, where Spurs avoided defeat under Tudor for the first time.

Romero will still need to be assessed under concussion protocols.

Palhinha trained away from the main group on Tuesday.

Destiny Udogie trained with the rest of the Spurs squad as the left-back targets a return from his hamstring injury.

Conor Gallagher was missing from training, having not been involved at Anfield after failing to recover in time from a fever.

Spurs will have Micky van de Ven available against Atletico.

The defender was suspended for the draw with Liverpool but should come straight back into the team, despite an improved display from Spurs at Anfield.

Richarlison is suspended for the second leg against Atletico.
