Tottenham Hotspur extended their unbeaten run against Manchester United to eight games with a 2-2 draw at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, though they looked set to take all three points.

United had taken the lead through Bryan Mbeumo in the first half, but late goals from Mathys Tel and Richarlison looked to have turned the tie around.

That was until a late goal from Matthijs de Ligt saw the visitors rescue a point to seal a second consecutive draw 2-2 in the Premier League.

United haven’t beat Spurs away since October 2021 and that wait will continue.

As it happened

After an even opening half-hour which saw both sides share the ball almost equally, it was October’s Premier League Player of the Month who gave the visitors the lead.

After he was put under unnecessary pressure by Pape Matar Sarr, a failed attempt to clear his lines from Micky Van de Ven led to Amad finding himself a crossing position, before he clipped the ball into the box where Mbeumo was waiting to nod home the opener.

Besides an guilt-edged chance squandered by Brennan Johnson, Spurs’ attacking threat was virtually non-existant in the first half as the side clocked in a total of 0.07.

Manchester United weren’t much better, but Mbeumo’s header was the difference, and Spurs were met by a frustrated chorus of boos at the break.

The hosts looked more dangerous in the second half and could have scored twice through Cristian Romeo and João Palhinha, but Senne Lammens pulled off two outstanding saves that kept the hosts from going ahead.

United made a triple change as Harry Maguire went off injured and was replaced by Lenny Yoro, while Casemiro and Matheus Cuhna were replaced by Mason Mount and Manuel Ugarte.

Spurs grew frustrated towards the end of the match as they failed to find the back of the net despite having more shots at goal than Manchester United.

Patience and persistence paid off for them eventually, though, as Tel came off the bench to equalise with a shot deflected off De Ligt and into the back of the net. With seven minutes of football left to play, Spurs were level and they’d soon go one better.

But first, Ruben Amorim’s side went down to 10 men in the dying minutes of the match as Benjamin Šeško went off injured, doubling the visitors’ injury woes after losing Maguire earlier in the second half.

Richarlison put the hosts into the lead in dramatic fashion before injury time and thought he had seal the winner, but it was a header from De Ligt from a late Manchester United corner which saw the visitors claim a second goal and a point very late in the day.

Spurs head into the international break in third place, while Manchester United sit in seventh.
