Tottenham Hotspur have broken their transfer record for the second time in less than a week, officially announcing the signing of Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United.
The high-profile deal is worth £100 million, with Spurs paying £92.5 million upfront and an additional £7.5 million in performance-related add-ons.
The signing marks a major statement of intent from the North London club, surpassing the £85 million record set days earlier for Mateus Fernandes from West Ham.
Head coach Roberto De Zerbi is reported to have been instrumental in the pursuit, identifying his compatriot as a key addition at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, a fact Tonali himself confirmed.
“I’m very happy to be here,” the midfielder told Spurs’ official website.
“When I arrived at the club today, it felt fantastic. People said about there being four or five clubs – there was only one.
“I spoke to the head coach for close to two hours about the club, the fans, the stadium and our football.
“It was like magic because I knew immediately that I had to sign for Tottenham.”
Tonali joins Spurs in the prime of his career at 26, bringing a blend of tactical intelligence, defensive resilience, and progressive ball-carrying ability.
He was a key figure for Newcastle last season, making 53 appearances in all competitions. Newcastle were reluctant to part with the deep-lying playmaker, but the financial package proved too significant to reject.
For Tonali, the chance to reunite with De Zerbi and anchor an ambitious project in London was an irresistible next step for both his career and his family.
With Tonali joining a summer intake that already includes Jan Paul van Hecke, Mateus Fernandes, Martin Dubravka, Marcos Senesi, and Andy Robertson, Tottenham are signalling their determination to put last season’s struggles firmly behind them.
