Ange Postecoglou says Tottenham are “not a big club” and has questioned their transfer strategy following the sacking of Thomas Frank.

Frank was dismissed on Wednesday with Spurs sitting five points above the Premier League relegation zone. He had replaced Postecoglou last summer.

Speaking on The Overlap’s Stick to Football podcast, the former Spurs boss praised the club’s facilities but suggested financial limits stopped them competing for top targets. “When you look at their expenditure and particularly their wages structure, they’re not a big club,” he said, as he noted that Tottenham were unable to sign players such as Pedro Neto, Bryan Mbeumo, Antoine Semenyo, and Marc Guehi, who have since moved elsewhere for big fees.

The Australian led Spurs to fifth place in his first season and ended their 17-year wait for a trophy by winning the Europa League in 2025. However, he was sacked after a 17th-place finish the following campaign.

To actually win, you’ve got to take some risks,” he added. “I felt like Tottenham were saying, ‘we’re one of the big boys’, but the reality is I don’t think they are.”
