In a recent report, journalist Mark Brus mentioned that Tottenham Hotspur have identified Olympique Lyonnais winger Malick Fofana as a target for the January transfer window. It is believed that Spurs are eager to acquire the services of the Belgian wide player this winter after failing to land him on deadline day.
Fofana managed to shine at times with his performances on the left side of Lyon’s attack in the previous campaign. The 20-year-old scored 11 times and earned six assists in 41 matches for the French club last season on all fronts.
The Belgian wide player deserves some credit for averaging 1.76 shots per 90 minutes in Ligue 1. He kept 48.4% of his attempts on target. Fofana even distributed the ball well in the final third after making 77.4% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via fbref.com).
His current contract at the French club will run out in the summer of 2028. Thus, it won’t be easy for Spurs to get a deal done for him on the cheap this January.

Fofana is a decent dribbler with the ball at his feet and can make some driving runs with it out on the flanks. He has got the vision to create some inviting chances for his teammates in the final third and can shoot the ball with venom from long range.
The Belgian talent can chip in by scoring and creating his fair share of goals from the left flank. He is primarily a left-sided wide player but can also fill in as a right-winger or play as a centre-forward if required.
We can expect Fofana to bring more pace and goals to Tottenham head coach Thomas Frank’s attack. He is good enough to compete for a regular first-team spot at the North London club in the coming years.
At 20, Fofana has the potential to be a future star in English football. Thus, it makes sense for Spurs to go all out to get him on board when the transfer window reopens in January. However, it remains to be seen whether Fofana can cope with the physical side and high intensity of the Premier League if Tottenham manage to snap him up next year.
