Tottenham Hotspur made a late enquiry for Crystal Palace striker Jean-Phillipe Mateta during the summer transfer window, according to Sky Sports journalist Kaveh Solhekol.
However, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium club did not bid for the Frenchman, signing his Paris Saint-Germain counterpart Randal Kolo Muani on loan instead.
Mateta ended last season with 17 goals across all competitions after bagging 19 goals in 2023-24, and he could have been a great signing for Spurs.
Palace would not have been open to doing business for the 28-year-old that late in the transfer window, having already lost Eberechi Eze to Arsenal.
The Eagles pulled the plug on Marc Guehi’s £35 million transfer to Liverpool at 4.00 pm on deadline day as manager Oliver Glasner threatened to resign if he was sold.
Spurs did not receive encouragement that they would be successful with a bid for Mateta, and they did not bother making an offer for him.
Tottenham manager Thomas Frank will now hope Kolo Muani can prove himself and not just be cover for Dominic Solanke.
He also needs Richarlison, Mohammed Kudus, Xavi Simons, Brennan Johnson and Mathys Tel to step up if Spurs are to be firing on all cylinders this term.
Frank has proven himself at Brentford but is facing a fresh challenge at Tottenham, and he will back himself to get the club punching above their weight during his debut campaign.
They shocked Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium but failed to impress at home in their defeat to Bournemouth last weekend.
Frank must address the issue of consistency if Tottenham are to be successful this season.
