In a recent print edition, Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness) stated that Tottenham Hotspur are set to join the race for Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori. It has been stated that Spurs would have to rival Juventus in pursuit of the Italian centre-back this summer.

Calafiori is having an impressive campaign at the Italian club after putting in a series of solid performances at the heart of their defence. The Italian talent has played in 35 matches for Bologna this season, picking up four assists on all fronts.

The 21-year-old has been a good performer when defending inside his half as he is averaging 1.5 tackles, 1.6 interceptions and 2.4 clearances per game in Serie A. He has even been accurate when distributing possession from the back based on his pass completion rate of 89.4% in league football (stats via whoscored).

The Roma-born defensive ace is under contract at Bologna until the summer of 2027 which would make it tough for Spurs to sign him on the cheap at the end of this season.

Is Calafiori A Good Choice For Tottenham Hotspur?

Calafiori is a solid tackler of the ball and can scan the danger well to secure the ball back for his side on the defensive end of the field. He doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when needed and excels at playing his way out from inside his half. Standing at 1.88m, Calafiori can use his strong frame to win a few 50-50 aerial duels for his team.

The Italian sensation is primarily a centre-back but can also play as a left-back or as a left-sided wide player if asked to do so. We can expect him to bring more bite and steel to Tottenham‘s defensive department. He is good enough to compete for a regular starting role in Angelos Postecoglu’s first team next season.

At 21, Calafiori has the potential to be a future star at the North London club. Hence, he would be an excellent choice for Spurs to pursue in the upcoming transfer window. However, it remains to be seen whether he can adapt to the high intensity of Premier League football.
