Tottenham Hotspur Stadium enjoys another European reprieve

It's been a funny old season for Tottenham Hotspur this year particularly when Thomas Frank's side are at home.

The Tottenham Hotspur cost £1 billion and is a truly magnificent, modern venue for football. Unfortunately for Spurs, boos are a common sound in recent seasons – particularly at the weekend following a 2-1 defeat at home to struggling West Ham United.

The North London side have won just twice in 11 games this year, suffering eight defeats. Only bottom-of-the-league Wolverhampton Wanderers have won fewer games at home in the eEnglish top flight this season (one – also against the Hammers).

Looking at the fixture list, it's going to take some effort to change that soon with Manchester City, Newcastle United, and local rivals Arsenal the next three visitors.

There is one competition where the Spurs supporters have enjoyed their time at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – the Champions League.

On Tuesday night, Spurs were already 1-0 up against Borussia Dortmund thanks to Cristián Romero before Daniel Svensson being sent off made the night easier. Dominic Solanke then scored his first goal of the season to give Tottenham Hotspur a much-needed 2-0 win.

There are six teams who have won all of their home games in the league phase of the Champions League this year: Atlético de Madrid, Chelsea, Arsenal, Bayern, Sporting, and Spurs – with London clearly proving a difficult place for European teams on their travels.

Oh those teams, only two have played four games at home. Sporting managed a late win against defending champions Paris Saint-Germain last night but Tottenham are the only team to achieve 12 points at home without conceding a single goal (10 scored, 0 conceded in total).

Spurs also managed to go the 2022/23 Champions League group stage without losing at home, stretching the run to eight games undefeated at home for Tottenham. RB Leipzig were the last Champions League side to win when Timo Werner's penalty downed a Tottenham side then managed by José Mourinho.

A good result away to Eintracht Frankfurt later this month will likely send Tottenham Hotspur through to the Round of 16 where their exceptional European home record could face a sterner test.
