According to reliable journalist Christian Falk on Twitter, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in RB Leipzig defender Ibrahima Konate, but face competition from Manchester United and Liverpool.
Konate, 21, came through the ranks at PSG and spent time at FC Sochaux youth setup before joining RB Leipzig in the summer of 2017. Since then, the Frenchman has gradually grown into a key member of the Saxony-based outfit, making 86 appearances so far.
The French centre-back endured a difficult 2019/20 campaign, as he spent most of it out injured. And while he started this season strongly, he has once again been hit with injuries, restricting him to just 12 appearances in all competitions.
In spite of his injury issues, Konate’s stock in Europe remains very high, with a number of top clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur interested in signing him, as per Christian Falk.
The German journalist reports that Konate has a release clause worth €40m that kicks in this summer. And, Tottenham are informed about the situation and are interested in the 21-year-old, along with fellow PL clubs Manchester United and Liverpool.
Jose Mourinho strengthened his defensive options with the signing of Joe Rodon last summer. However, the game against Liverpool showed that the Welshman still has a long way to go before he becomes an elite defender.
In addition, Toby Alderweireld is not getting any younger while Eric Dier hasn’t been as consistent as one would have liked at centre-back. Thus, bolstering our options at the back would certainly make sense in the summer.
Konate, while a talented young defender, has had a tad too many injury issues so early in his career. So, signing him would be a move wrought with risk. It will be interesting to see if the club pursues a move for the 21-year-old.
