Sky Germany currently reports that Tottenham have been scouting Borussia Mönchengladbach left-back Luca Netz. The 22-year-old sits on an expiring contract and counts as one of the candidates for sale by his Bundesliga outfit during the current January transfer window. Several other Serie A sides have been linked with a swoop for the Germany U21 international.

The Westphalian Rheinische Post newspaper claims that Gladbach have no plans to extend Netz’s expiring deal. BMG sporting director Rouven Schröder recently let it be known that he and his staff would entertain offers for the €6m-valued defender this month. Netz remains eligible to negotiate a free transfer to another club this month due to his contractual status.

Why hasn’t Luca Netz’s career taken off?

When Netz moved to Gladbach from Hertha BSC in the summer of 2021, the Berlin-native was considered a sure bet to someday pay for the German national team. Netz accrued plenty of playing time under the head coaching regimes of Adi Hütter, Daniel Farke, and Gerardo Seoane. One of the problems affecting Gladbach over the last four-plus years, however, has been total inconsistency when it comes to regular starters in the defensive ranks.

This affected not only Netz but his fellow BMG fullback Joe Scally. Both Scally and Netz are known to be up for sale this month. In Netz’s case, there’s been a big battle with Lukas Ullrich; another Berlin native, Hertha academy man, and Germany U21 international. Ullrich and Netz have been contesting a very tight race for minutes over the last two seasons.

This year, Netz only earned two Bundesliga starts through 11 Bundesliga matchdays. New BMG head coach Eugen Polanski has nevertheless shifted favor back to Netz recently and handed him five consecutive league starts. Netz still lacks confidence going forward and has only gotten his name on the scoresheet with one single solitary assist this season.

Much as has been the case with German left-backs such as Robin Gosens and Maximilian Mittelstädt, Netz’s crosses into the box sometimes seem unpolished. Netz’s long carries are sparse and he sometimes shies away from direct duels in the middle-of-the-park. On occasion, one catches a glimpse of the more reliable left-back who garnered regular assists between 2021 and 2024.
