Sport Bild reports that Tottenham are currently the more likely suitors for RB Leipzig attacking prodigy Xavi Simons. The 22-year-old was again absent from RB training and some reports suggest that the Dutchman is in London negotiating his next move. Xavi’s Bundesliga club has confirmed that the player has been “released for talks about his future” and will be absent “indefinitely“.
The German tabloid does nevertheless note that – as was the case with Xavi’s potential move to Chelsea – matters are proceeding slowly. Sport Bild emphasizes that Spurs have not submitted a formal offer yet. The German Red Bulls continue to seek €70m (fair market value) for their player and the respective clubs have thus far only traded figures as part of exploratory talks.
Leipzig may still wish to move Xavi at a slightly lower cost. At present, RB possess a 34-man-squad considered far too large by Bundesliga standards. Simons managed to perform well in Leipzig’s opening round cup victory over SV Sandhausen, but was a total bust in his team’s Bundesliga opener against Bayern.
Simons registered a goal and an assist in the cup tie, yet struggled mightily in a deep midfield deployment against Bayern on opening night. One way or another, Xavi is not expected to feature for the Saxons in this weekend’s league fixture against Heidenheim.
