Early red card ruined a game in which Spurs were more than capable of getting a result
10-man Tottenham remain without a league win in 2026 after Manchester United secured a comfortable 2-0 win at Old Trafford.
Bryan Mbeumo gave United the lead in the 38th minute, finishing a sharp corner routine, shortly after Cristian Romero was sent off for a studs-up challenge on Casemiro.
The hosts dominated after the break, and doubled their lead late on as Bruno Fernandes prodded home Diogo Dalot’s cross.
Sam Tabuteau was at Old Trafford to rate the Spurs players...
Guglielmo Vicario 8
Will have been disappointed to see Mbeumo’s goal squirm past him, but made an excellent reaction save to tip over Casemiro’s header. Kept the score down in the second half with a number of good stops.
Joao Palhinha 7
Pushed into midfield rather than the auxiliary centre-back role he has been used to in recent weeks, Palhinha was aggressive in the tackle as Spurs looked for some sort of foothold in the game.
Cristian Romero 3
After the week he has had, the last thing Romero needed was to see red shortly before the half-hour mark. A harsh decision given that he played the ball, but another instance where the Spurs captain has lost control and led with unnecessary aggression.
Micky van de Ven 5
Back in the side after injury, this was not his most-assured performance. Loose touches and a couple of rash attempts to win the ball back summed up his display.
Archie Gray 7
Impressed as he was restored to a makeshift right wing-back role. Not afraid to direct his team-mates. He was first to every loose ball and maintained composure in possession, even as Spurs were reduced to 10 men. He did, however, let Fernandes ghost past him to prod home United’s second.
Pape Matar Sarr 6
Sarr has been in and out of the side under Frank, but was entrusted to partner Gallagher here. He was prepared to take the ball and run at United’s backline early on. His endeavour was cut short once Romero was sent off.
Destiny Udogie 4
Looked a second off the pace throughout and was not alert enough as United took the lead with a corner routine. His afternoon was compounded when he left the pitch injured early in the second half.
Wilson Odobert 6
Rested against City, he was expected to play an important role in transition for Spurs, but was sacrificed for Radu Dragusin after Romero’s dismissal.
Xavi Simons 6
Tried to get in and amongst it as Spurs battled to win back possession and nearly scored an unlikely equaliser with a speculative second-half effort. Could not influence the game in the final third.
Dominic Solanke 5
Had been hoping to build on his excellent recent run in front of goal, but cut an isolated figure as Spurs were penned back in their own half.
Radu Dragusin 7
Played a part in ensuring the game did not get away from Spurs. A measured performance in trying circumstances. Frank will be glad he did not let the Romanian leave in January.
Souza 7
Showed his pace to beat Amad in a foot race as United broke from a Spurs free-kick. A difficult game to be thrown into on his Premier League debut, but he looked assured of himself.
Yves Bissouma 6
Came on with Spurs fighting a losing battle and was left chasing shadows as United hunted for goals.
Randal Kolo Muani 5
Had the fewest touches of any Spurs player and his poor hold-up play was nearly punished with the final touch of the game as Sesko headed straight at Vicario.
Mathys Tel 6
Much like the rest of Spurs’ substitutes, there was little Tel could do to change the game.
Unused subs: Kinsky, Byfield, Olusesi, Williams-Barnet
