Igor Tudor’s bold call to bench No1 goalkeeper backfired tremendously

Antonin Kinsky was hooked inside 17 minutes as Tottenham fell to a 5-2 defeat in the first-leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie away to Atletico Madrid.

A nightmare opening quarter of an hour saw Marcos Llorente and Antoine Griezmann score after slips from Kinsky and Micky van de Ven, before Kinsky miscued a pass horribly, allowing Julian Alvarez to slot home.

Robin Le Normand added a fourth for Atletico, but Pedro Porro quickly responded to put Spurs on the scoresheet.

Alvarez got his second of the night and Atletico’s fifth in the second half, after breaking from inside his own half to finish.

Spurs again reduced the arrears as half-time substitute Dominic Solanke scored following a mistake from Jan Oblak, but the damage was already done on a harrowing evening for Tudor’s men.

Sam Tabuteau was at the Estadio Metropolitano to rate the Spurs players...

Antonin Kinsky 1: Nothing short of a nightmare Champions League debut for Kinsky. Fell over and gifted the ball to Julian Alvarez, who squared for Llorente to score the opening goal before letting the ball run past him for Alvarez to add a third. Hooked after 17 minutes.

Kevin Danso 5: Little more than a bystander to the mess unfolding around him. It was a committed display from the Austrian, who completed the most defensive actions of any Spurs player. Not much that he could do for any of the goals.

Cristian Romero 5: Rushed over to talk to Tudor after Kinsky’s second mistake. Spurs’ captain was at a loss to come to terms with his side’s performance.

Micky van de Ven 3: His slip allowed Griezmann to break free and score. After his dismissal against Crystal Palace, this was the last thing he needed. A rare lapse in judgment on a night where nothing went right for Spurs.

Pedro Porro 7: Scored at the end of a chaotic first half hour to give Spurs something to cling on to. An otherwise positive attacking presence, and capitalised on Oblak’s mistake for Solanke’s goal. Could not keep up with Alvarez as Atletico added a fifth after the break.

Pape Matar Sarr 5: Saw his header back towards his own goal expertly saved by Vicario, and it was his pass that Van de Ven failed to get under control as Griezmann raced through to double Atletico’s lead. Made the most tackles of any Spurs player on the pitch, but he looked completely overwhelmed in the first-half.

Archie Gray 5: Spurs’ young midfield were always going to need time to feel their way into the game, and they were given nothing of the sort. Gray was anonymous, but it was hardly his fault.

Djed Spence 5: Booked early on, his header towards Sarr lacked conviction in the lead-up to Griezmann’s goal. Contributed to a chaotic defensive display.

Randal Kolo Muani 4: Hooked at half-time as Tudor looked for answers. Saw none of the ball, taking just 14 touches, as Spurs were kept under the cosh by Atletico.

Mathys Tel 6: Actually showed a lot of intent, either side of Atletico’s splurge of goals, with Spurs carrying a threat in attack despite their defensive mishaps.

Richarlison 6: Some tidy work to keep the ball alive for Porro’s goal, and he tried in vain to make things happen for Spurs in attack.

Subs:

Guglielmo Vicario 6: Made an excellent initial save to stop Sarr’s header, but was helpless as Le Normand followed up. Will have been disappointed to have been dropped, but he will no doubt be feeling for Kinsky.

Conor Gallagher 5: Given a warm reception by the Atletico fans when he was introduced, and that was about as good as his night got. One of the players who supported Kinsky down the tunnel following his withdrawal.

Dominic Solanke 6: Scored off the bench to reduce the arrears. Has not been at his best under Tudor, but has still managed to stay among the goals.

Joao Palhinha 5: A damage limitation job for Palhinha, who gave Spurs more authority in and out of possession in the second half. Came off late on with a concussion.

Xavi Simons N/A: Introduced to provide fresh legs, but took just nine touches.

Unused: Austin, Dragusin, Olusesi, Rowswell
