Tottenham Hotspur are ready to match West Ham United’s £85 million demands for Mateus Fernandes, according to the Daily Mail.

The 21-year-old midfielder is a key target for Tottenham this summer, but they’ve had to face serious competition from clubs in the Premier League and abroad.

Fernandes has become one of the most sought-after players in Europe following an impressive season despite West Ham’s disappointing relegation from the Premier League.

He was a standout performer for the Hammers last term, and Tottenham want to reward his performances by bringing him back to the Premier League this summer.

The Portuguese midfielder has attracted interest from Manchester United, Arsenal, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.

Tottenham seemed the least likely club to win the race, given that other suitors can offer Champions League football.

However, they’re taking proactive steps to make sure the Portugal international midfielder ends up at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer.

New manager Roberto De Zerbi is reportedly pushing for the club to finalise the deal for Fernandes.

Tottenham have been one of the most active clubs in the transfer market, with the club keen to avoid another disappointing campaign spent flirting with relegation.

De Zerbi wants to build a squad that’s capable of competing at the top end of the Premier League and has already reshaped his backline by bringing in three new defenders.

Tottenham signed Andrew Robertson and Marcos Senesi on free transfers before forking out £52m to snap up Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton & Hove Albion.

They’re now focusing on rebuilding the midfield and have identified a couple of exciting targets, including Fernandes.

While he’s open to joining Spurs, the Portuguese midfielder would prefer a move to Man United this summer.

That hasn’t fazed Tottenham, who are also interested in Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali. The Magpies want a fee closer to £100m for the Italian midfielder.
