Spurs Face Monaco Test Amid Defensive Injury Concerns in Champions League Clash

Tottenham travel to Stade Louis II tonight for a pivotal Champions League fixture against Monaco, with Thomas Frank’s side facing mounting injury concerns in defence. The absences of key players threaten to unsettle the structure of a team still searching for rhythm in Europe.

Key Injuries Disrupt Spurs’ Champions League Plans

Cristian Romero will not feature after pulling out of the warm-up against Aston Villa with an adductor problem. The Argentine’s absence leaves a noticeable gap in Spurs’ back line, both in leadership and balance. Frank confirmed, “It’s an adductor strain. We will assess it more this week before we confirm any timeframe.” Romero has not travelled to France and did not take part in training on Tuesday.

Destiny Udogie also remains sidelined with a knee irritation sustained after international duty. “We are assessing and working very hard to get on top of it. We’ll know more day by day,” Frank said, suggesting his recovery could still take time. Without Udogie, Spurs will likely name an unchanged back four, with Kevin Danso and Micky van de Ven expected to anchor central defence.

Tactical Adjustments in Midfield and Attack

After the lethargic performance against Villa, a reshuffle in midfield seems possible. Lucas Bergvall and Pape Matar Sarr are both candidates to add energy and control in the centre of the pitch, two qualities Spurs lacked at the weekend. Xavi Simons, meanwhile, could move wide to the left after an inconsistent run in the No10 position, offering width and creativity to Frank’s attacking setup.

Mathys Tel’s exclusion from Spurs’ Champions League squad opens the door for Richarlison to return as the focal point in attack. Randal Kolo Muani is available again, but the manager is expected to limit his involvement as the forward continues to build match fitness.

Expected Spurs Lineup Against Monaco

Frank’s men are expected to line up in a 4-2-3-1 system: Vicario; Porro, Danso, Van de Ven, Spence; Palhinha, Sarr; Kudus, Bergvall, Simons; Richarlison.

Several absentees remain a concern, including Romero, Udogie, Davies, Dragusin, Takai, Maddison, Kulusevski, Bissouma and Solanke, while Tel is ineligible. Despite these setbacks, Spurs will hope for a disciplined performance as they look to strengthen their position in the Champions League group.
