Ange Postecoglou’s side turned things around in the Europa League in midweek, coming from 1-0 down to beat AZ Alkmaar 3-2 on aggregate and book their place in the quarter-finals.

That remains the club’s most realistic way of achieving European football next season, with Spurs currently 13th in the Premier League, 13 points off the top six.

In order to close the gap, they must start winning again, having failed to win their last two Premier League games after three straight victories.

Tottenham were edged out by Manchester City at the end of February, though they did well to recover a 0-2 deficit for a share of the spoils against high-flying Bournemouth last weekend.

Son Heung-min came off the bench to score a late equaliser from the penalty spot in last weekend’s 2-2 draw with Bournemouth. The Tottenham skipper returned to the starting lineup in midweek, and should keep his place for this game.

Brennan Johnson is also likely to be reinstated to the starting XI, having been on the bench against AZ Alkmaar, as is Yves Bissouma.

Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven — both of whom recently returned from injury — should continue their partnership in the heart of defence.

You would certainly expect that to be the case with the long-term absence of Radu Dragusin, who continues his recovery from an ACL injury, while Kevin Danso is also sidelined with a thigh problem.

The February signing is not expected to return until after the international break, neither are Dejan Kulusevski or Richarlison.

Tottenham looking to scratch pre-international break bugbear

Despite failing to win their last two Premier League games, Postecoglou’s side did prevail in their two most recent league outings away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

They will now look to win three successive away league games for the first time since a run of four straight victories in November 2020.

However, in order to do so, Tottenham must overcome what has been a slight bugbear in recent times.

Indeed, they have lost each of their last five Premier League games on a matchday immediately before an international break, which included a 3-0 loss at Fulham last season.

Whatever the outcome, one thing we can surely expect to see at Craven Cottage in goals.

Tottenham’s Premier League games have seen more scored than any other team this season (96), while only leaders Liverpool (69) have found the net on more occasions than Postecoglou’s men (55).
