Tottenham play host to Liverpool in the Premier League on Saturday in their final match before Christmas, but there won’t be much festive cheer for Thomas Frank and his side if they do not gain a positive result.
The pressure is mounting on Frank following a run of just one win in seven league games that has seen Spurs slip into the bottom half of the standings, with last weekend’s 3-0 loss at Nottingham Forest proving a particular low point.
A visit from the reigning champions, who have shown improved form of late after their own recent slump, does not provide Spurs with the easiest opportunity to return to form, with Saturday’s match set to kick off at 17:30 GMT and will be broadcast in the UK on both Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League.
Tottenham (4-2-3-1): Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Spence; Palhinha, Bentancur; Kudus, Simons, Kolo Muani; Richarlison.
Frank has confirmed that he has no fresh injury concerns to contend with heading into Saturday’s game but long-term absentees Dominic Solanke (ankle), Dejan Kulusevski (knee), and James Maddison (knee) remain unavailable.
Of that trio, forward Solanke is the closest to a return, while left-back Destiny Udogie is not expected to make his comeback from a hamstring problem until the New Year.
Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma have both linked up with their countries ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations, which limits Frank’s options in the middle of the park.
Archie Gray started there against Forest, but was at fault for the opening goal. Frank says the youngster has responded well from that mistake, but his place in the starting XI could still go to Joao Palhinha.
Frank has spent much of this week having to deal with speculation surrounding his future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but he insists he still has the backing of the club’s board.
While that may be the case, the same does not appear to be true when it comes to Lilywhites supporters, with many being left frustrated by Frank’s perceived defensive tactics.
The former Brentford boss may have got more grace in that department had his side been winning games, but victories have been hard to come by in the league, particularly on home turf, where they have won just twice all season.
A victory over last season’s runaway league champions would go some way to appeasing his critics, but defeat would likely make Frank’s Christmas dinner taste a little bitter, especially if he is tucking into it on the back of being relieved of his duties in North London.
