Aston Villa (4-4-1-1): Martinez; Cash, Diego Carlos, Torres, Digne; Ramsey, Tielemans, Onana, Bailey; Rogers; Watkins

Five points separate the two sides, who had contrasting fortunes in the midweek EFL Cup matches.

Tottenham progressed to the quarter-finals with a 2-1 win over Manchester City, while Villa were knocked out following a home defeat to Crystal Palace.

Home form could be crucial to Tottenham’s European hopes

A trophy is still the number one target for Tottenham and Ange Postecoglou, but European football will be firmly in the thoughts of the club’s hierarchy.

Having qualified for the Europa League this season, Spurs will hope to build on that and claim a place in next season’s Champions League.

Sunday’s opponents Villa are likely to be one of their main rivals for the top four and still look to be a level above Postecoglou’s men.

Unai Emery’s squad have lost just one of their opening nine league games and currently sit top of the new Champions League standings.

Villa head to north London unbeaten in their six away games in all competitions and go in search of a third straight win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tottenham have lost their last two in the league, but both of those were on the road and they are a different beast on home soil.

It’s five home wins on the spin in all competitions and since February, only Arsenal and Manchester City have recorded league wins at Spurs’ 63,000 all-seater stadium.

Postecoglou’s team have scored seven goals in their last two home league games, despite falling behind to both Brentford and West Ham United.

Tottenham vs Aston Villa team news

Son Heung-min is expected to return to the Tottenham squad, having missed the last two matches with a muscle injury.

But Spurs are sweating on the fitness of three other first-team stars, with Micky van de Ven, Timo Werner and Cristian Romero all doubtful.

Van de Ven was forced to leave the field on Wednesday after suffering a hamstring problem and faces a late fitness test.

Both Werner and Romero came off in the second half against Man City and will be assessed by the Spurs medical team.

Villa made a number of changes for their midweek cup tie, with the likes of Tyrone Mings, Emi Buendia, Joe Gauci and Boubacar Kamara given starts.

Emi Martinez will return between the posts for Sunday’s away day, while Pau Torres should also start, with Emery to decide whether it’s Diego Carlos or Ezri Konsa who partners him.

Amadou Onana and Youri Tielemans were both rested in the defeat to Palace and should start in the centre of midfield.
